I don't wear Prada to the playground

.... but sometimes I wish I did. Maybe Prada is not what's in Vogue right now, maybe saying "in vogue" is not in vogue...but all the more to the point that I'm clueless as to the ins and outs of what's in! And that's fine. That's who I am, and who I am just can't understand being decked out in Prada (or whatever), high heels, a beautiful flowing scarf, the latest high fashion bag, full face of make-up and perfectly coiffed hair at the sand pit in the playground with your toddler. What the....?

I don't get it. Let me tell you, I'm in the minority here in DC too! Me and the Nannies are the only ones in jogging pants and tennis shoes, actually, some of the nannies are in skirts (but they do have on tennis shoes with that skirt).

This is the reason I pretty much stick to the Adams Morgan playground. There seem to be more Moms like me at this playground versus Rose Park located between Dupont Circle and Georgetown. I guess location is everything. I get the same feeling going to the Dupont Circle Farmers market versus my own neighborhood Market. As one friend put it, you feel like you have to dress up to shop at the Dupont Circle Farmers Market. These people think they are at some sort of European Market photo shoot!

I digress.

What I want to know is WHO ARE THESE MOMS?! It's not so much a money thing as it is a TIME thing. I can NOT leave my two year old alone for very long before he destroys something. So how in the heck would I ever have a chance to take a nice long shower, fix my hair and put on makeup and assemble some sort of "outfit"?! Well, OK, it's a comfort thing too. I really can't see myself chasing and playing with my two year old in heels! But then, I rarely see these moms chase & play with their kids - the poor things. I take solace in the fact that these women must have more help at home during the day than I do! If you're one of these Prada-Moms...please do not burst my bubble by commenting on this post that you in fact do not have help at home...I don't think I could take it!

I am feeling good if I switch from my sleep bra to a normal bra before I leave the house! I have worn makeup less than five times in as many months. My hair is always in a ponytail even though it's super short. And I wish I lived close so we could chill and play together on the playgrounds!!!!

Great post Jenn - loved reading it!

I totally agree!

I've actually just started wearing a sports bra with my t-shirts and sweats so people think I'm on the way to the gym. It makes me feel less guilty about the attire, hair and fact that I need a shower.

I think those people sound sick. How sad that they would have to make a choice between playing with their children and getting dirty.

I agree with Jessica! I have a friend who has a 5 months old daugther, and she has never TOUCHED her this whole time because she doesn't want to get dirty! She also has a 2 years old girl who now loves her nanny more! How sad is that?

I'm not a mom, but planning to be one soon enough....and I've made a decision to be a mom in tennis shoes, training pants, and ponny tails, and earn all the love and respect of my kids, than look all perfect and earn the title 'stranger lady who happens to share DNA with us'!

@ Christy: ME TOO! I need normal mommies! I have one normal couple I like, but nothing ever pans out for us to meet up. She's working during the week and the weekends are daddy's time. I suppose we'll be more likely to meet up when I start working again! :)

@Scary Mommy: I like that idea...will have to start doing that.

@Jessica: Yes, sick and sad. They really do look silly, at least to me, so I don't who is impressed with that - I guess they impress themselves.

@Hans & Shinta: You're already on your way to being an awesome mom!

Thankfully, I have never had to witness bahavior like these moms, but it would really grate my nerves. And the whole nanny thing completely baffles me. I can't get enough time with my daughter and the thought of having her love someone more than me just tears me up thinking about it!

hi. I found you via A Lil Welsh Rarebit....I like your post momma!

You know I heard through a friend, upon asking her about her cousin who always looked amazing in the photos I would see of her, always dressed to the nines and full on makeup and hair-How does she do it?

My friend said that her cousin puts herself together while her daughters trash her cousins house, every single morning...ugg.

I'm like you..I'm just lucky to get to the playground wearing clothes at all and often I'm a scrub. hahaha Priorities, priorities...mine is sleep.

First - I'll give the Prada Mom just one prop - at least she's "there" if only in body. When I used to nanny in DC, that was kind of an irregularity in the neighborhood.

But you are totally right - Prada Moms have WAY more help and are significantly less involved in their children and more involved in themselves. You're in your battle gear - ready for anything, because you know anything can happen! I think it's better to be prepared than coiffed and of course better to be involved vs. not!

PS I don't even own any PRADO much less Prada...Great post! :)

I always get dirty at the playground, why would I waste good (not even designer) clothes on that. Lucky for me we don't see too many of those moms here so I don't feel too bad.

Hi! First-time commenter...I like your blog. I TOTALLY understand where you're coming from!

I live in NYC, and everyone looks so damn perfect all the time! I just don't understand. I try to put a little lipstick on when I walk out the door, but Prada? Oh no. No Prada and no heels. Sneakers for me. It's a lot of working lifting a stroller up and down the stairs of the subway!

Wow! Really...thanks everyone for all the comments! I'm inspired to share more of my true feelings rather than always treading lightly on here... look for future rants.. ha! I'm kidding...mostly.

Thanks again for all the comments, it's good to know I'm not alone in my jogging pants and tennis shoes!

I am definitely NOT a Prada mom. I think about the same thing, how in the world would I have the time to get all cute?

Thank you so much for sharing your post!

@Heather - thanks, glad to know there is just one more of us out there!

I think the prada moms must have clones to do all the actual work at home...

Maybe those women are filthy rich and have nannies...or send their kids to preschool all day or something.
